Week 4: RSS feeds

July 15, 2008

I’ve spent over an hour on this week’s task, but I’m not there yet!  I made an iGoogle page and subscribed to Google reader.  I’ve also been adding to my delicious bookmarks.  I haven’t found any RSS feeds that I want yet.  It is easy to subscribe to some of the bundles of feeds that Google Reader suggests, but I know I won’t have time to look at them.  Next time, I’ll try to find NPR’s Fresh Air and see if there is an RSS feed for it.

Even with setting aside time each week, I wonder if I’ll ever have the time to really master some of these THINGS.  I guess I’ll make time for the ones that will truly be useful to me at school.  Now back to weeding books.

New question–Even though my computer date and time is correct, these posts are dated for the next day.  I can change the publishing date, but if I go on to add a comment like I am doing now, it will post at the incorrect date again.  Next time I’ll try to find a way to correct this.

Week 3

July 8, 2008

I’ve explored Flickr and set up an account to use at school.  I even added a buddy icon, something I’m absurdly pleased about.  Even tho I’ve uploaded some photos, I know it’s going to take a lot of use before Flickr becomes a “must have” tool.  I think it will be more useful to me for family photos.

I’m setting up a different account to use at home.  Are other people setting up separate accounts for home and work?  What are the pros and cons for doing it this way?

Week 2

July 3, 2008

Is it just me being in too much of a hurry, or is this blog stuff confusing?  I’m probably just being an anxious beginner.  I remember feeling this way when I started making web pages, but now it’s second nature.  It’s good to be a rank beginner again as a reminder of what kids might be feeling as I ask them to try new things. Risk-taking can be hard.

My task today, since I’ve already started a blog, is to figure out how to use tags and categories.  I hope I can find a tutorial.

Later . . . I didn’t find a tutorial per se, but figured out how to do a custom banner.  I’d like to find more bells and whistles, but have to get back to weeding books.
